DIRECTOR General of National Emergency Management Agency, NEMA, Mohammad Sani-Sidi has disclosed of plans to co-opt qualified graduates into the agency in order to complement the existing Emergency Management Volunteer groups in the country.
Sani-Sidi disclosed this while hosting some outgoing corps members who served in the NYSC-NEMA Emergency Vanguard, including a corper, Miss Tola Ojo who founded a social media forum called Youths Against Disaster, YAD, in the Federal Capital Territory Abuja.
He said NEMA would continue to train all its volunteers on basic principles of disaster management and precautionary measures in curtailing spread of epidemics, natural and man-made emergencies.
His words: “We will soon dedicate more efforts in training and improving the capacity of emergency volunteers in all the states of the federation through seminars, interactive forums and provision of relevant working kits”.
While commending Miss Ojo for undertaking several advocacy and awareness campaigns on emergency management and presentation of relief materials to hospitals, he said NEMA would continue to supports such projects and where necessary offer automatic employments and scholarship for deserving corpers.
He said that the agency is desirous of recruiting more competent, experienced and capable persons into the service but that those with background knowledge and experience in emergency management situations, including volunteers would have greater chances of absorption into the agency as staff.
Early in her remarks on behalf of other corpers, Miss Ojo who had produced widely circulated pamphlets on measures against flood in Nigeria and other writings on disaster management, commended the NEMA management for training them and sponsoring projects and programmes of corps members in the areas of emergency management issues.
She said members of NYSC Emergency Volunteers have been very useful in awareness generation, early warning and information dissemination. Their activities, she said, had helped greatly in overcoming a number of disasters, especially during floods, communal clashes and bomb blast where few of them were recorded as victims.
NEMA is working towards integrating its various volunteers groups, including Grassroots Emergency Corps, NYSC Vanguard and Executive volunteers to be formidable platforms in curtailing disaster through advocacies and assistance as first responders during emergency situations in any part of the country.
